Scientific thinking skills in first grade students

The results obtained in this research allow us to identify that in the first years of schooling, the exploration of plants manages to awaken scientific skills on a large scale, since curiosity, interest and wonder give rise to inquiry and consequently, this leads to the search for answers, the formulation of hypotheses, among others.

Introduction: In Colombia, it is evident that scientific thinking skills, evaluated through various census tests, are far from reaching ideal levels; This is reflected, among others, in the low rate of scientific vocations of its students. Objective: based on the low results obtained in the area of Natural Sciences in the Tests Saber 2017 in Colombia, a series of strategies to be developed was proposed in a group of students of grade 1 of primary basic education  of an official Educational Institution. Methodology: The strategies were worked within the frame work of the Teaching of Sciences based on the Inquiry. Research of a qualitative nature, was addressed through participant observation and was developed through five sessions that sought to promote basic skills, corresponding to school ages of children of grade 1: observation, the ability to ask questions and analyze data. All activities were raised from the interests of the students and took as an articulating axis the sowing and care of various ornamental and medicinal plants. Results: they showed significant advances in the identification, observation, classification and inquiry skills of the students. Conclusion: the results show that this model implies a vision about scientific  knowledge as a human construction. The school then, is called to encourage from the first  years of schooling, this type of thinking skills, so necessary in a world that increasingly has more scientific and technological advances.
